Last Saturday marked the beginning of Outreach Saturday programs and what a great day we had! When I arrived to school before groups began, the first staff person I met said, “Isn’t it great that Saturdays are back?! Saturdays are my favorite days. I can’t wait to see all the students!” When the students arrived, many came running in, giving hugs to all their friends and hi-fives to their favorite staff members.
As the students went to their groups, new parents in our Unstuck and On Target! program began their semester long journey to learn new social intervention and executive function parenting strategies.
This week, we also began a year-long research project to measure student outcomes in the areas of self-esteem and loneliness in our recreation programs. We were so impressed with how well the students answered questions and participated in this less-preferred activity. We are excited about this project, and hope to show how participating in quality recreational programming can increase self-esteem and decrease loneliness.
In addition to learning, so many fun (and funny) things happen at Ivymount on Saturdays! The girls in Girls’ Club engaged in great conversations about their summers, schools, and friends without prompting. A student in Camp Live Out Loud won a prized whoopee cushion and had a ball showing all the staff how to use it. Several new friendships were made across all the programs. One of our young adults even sang his favorite Bryan Adams song on stage during our pizza party.
We are so excited to have our hallways filled with students again on Saturdays! To find out more about our Saturday Outreach programs, visit our brand new website and click on the programs tab.
